Psychology of Music In Games

Nostalgia, mood changer or any other reaction you get from sounds shows in the simplest of ways why sound is so important. The many ways of how sound works including but not limited to invoking certain moods such as joy are amplified when it comes to games. This is because it gives the player a more interactive experience by making the music set the scene and makes the player feel how the developers want and hope they feel. One of the best examples I can give in sounds invoking different music is the genre greats like Attack on Titan, Halo, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time and the tv shows Vikings and game of thrones.

Attack on Titan

The first product I wanted to talk about and how their sound would influence our game was Attack on Titan more specifically the soundtrack used for the Armoured Titan and because of how it was introduced into this landscape instantly got fans addicted to the idea of the power that this new Titan brings, as seen in the clip above. The build-up. Massive strides. Then finally the peak of the perfect Scandinavian music introducing us to the Armoured Titan made me want to include something similar to our game, that's when the idea for the Tank having something similar included in his introduction came in and through hours we have compiled something small but that already personifies the power we wanted to portray in the introduction of this boss type monster.

Halo

From Halo, many people will think we would use something similar to their main theme, but instead, we went for the smallest piece of Halo's soundtrack or an idea included in the soundtrack, the church choir at the beginning of the theme building it up and using a more African base mix as a slow tempo build up for the Knight, putting this together for a sample we realised we had hit in our opinion a memorable soundtrack, and when the people hear it for the first time we hope they feel the same way as well.

Tomorrow Neverland

Finally before moving on to the main soundtrack of the game or the idea we have I wanted to highlight one that I could not think of a good example outside maybe the recent anime tomorrow neverland. the exploder soundtrack, one of the most fun ones to work on because of all the elements mixed in together like the ambient sound of insects moving to give a literal skin crawling feeling for the player. Which I could not do enough justice without showing the full soundtrack clip of the Exploder which will be shown in later blogs.

Main game soundtrack

Now like many other people I love music and even though Game of Thrones has produced arguably the best soundtrack of any tv series and Ocarina of time stands on it's on level when it comes to its game soundtrack, Vikings with their mix of old Scandinavian music stands out above the rest and because of this we are firmly in agreement to use a mix of lo-fi and Scandinavian music as the main soundtrack of our game. when we realise our trailer and even alpha of the game we will mostly showcase this combination of music and hope the audience likes it as much as we do so far.
