Grey Boxing and Choices

I have done a bit of grey boxing to give our team an Idea of what our game will look like this was because people had conflicting ideas so the best thing to do was to get everyone on the same page.

I have also thought about Choices and Consequences of those choices which would be something that would add difficulty as well make you feel more in charge or powerless but the point is to create pressure on the player so it wasn't just tower defence focused but also some politics.

Examples of games That use Choices:

  • Crusader Kings 2
  • Europa Universalis 4
  • Victoria 2
  • Hearts of Iron 4
All four of these games are made by Paradox however all of them use different systems forcing the player into making difficult decisions that will make the game more interesting and more difficult.

Crusader Kings 2 uses events that can fire randomly or be fired off though certain actions which will normally have you, pick out of a few choices and these choices may improve or worsen your diplomatic relations or stats which in turn could have major effects on your gameplay. For example, if someone (Ai) within your kingdom doesn't like a law that's currently in place or wants to have someone else in charge they would create a faction. This faction will slowly gain power and eventually an event will fire which will ask you to do as the demands ask or a revolt might fire which you could lose however if you accept their demands you will lose prestige which counts towards your Score and the person with the highest score at the end of the game wins.

Hearts of Iron 4 uses a decision tree instead of random events this decision tree will normally just have you picking the order in which you would like to get benefits however sometimes you have to pick between befriending Poland or attacking them or whether you want to let Trotsky stay in the country or kick him out. These types of decisions, however, may have major effects on the game for example if you attack Poland you might fire off a world war but if you befriend Poland you won't be able to get full power over that land which will make the game harder.

Europa Universalis 4 and Victoria 2 have a mixture of the choice systems Crusader Kings 2 and Hearts of Iron 4 use.
