Psychology of Music In Games

Image
Nostalgia, mood changer or any other reaction you get from sounds shows in the simplest of ways why sound is so important. The many ways of how sound works including but not limited to invoking certain moods such as joy are amplified when it comes to games. This is because it gives the player a more interactive experience by making the music set the scene and makes the player feel how the developers want and hope they feel. One of the best examples I can give in sounds invoking different music is the genre greats like Attack on Titan, Halo, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time and the tv shows Vikings and game of thrones.  Attack on Titan The first product I wanted to talk about and how their sound would influence our game was Attack on Titan more specifically the soundtrack used for the Armoured Titan and because of how it was introduced into this landscape instantly got fans addicted to the idea of the power that this new Titan brings, as seen in the clip above. The build-up...

Importance of Colours in Games

Image
Colours Colour is a sensation of light which is a sensation of energy and energy can stimulate and evoke a lot of emotions and can even influence physiological and psychological behaviours such as aggression. Obviously, even though we are still novice as game developers we are aware of the importance of colours when it comes to games that's why after weeks of discussing what our colours would be and how they would interact with the world we ended up deciding what nearly every building's colours would look like and how the different characters/elements' colours would interact with the buildings and the general environment of the game.        Colours in games and examples  as loosely mentioned before the primary function of colour is to easily identify objects and evoke emotion and using this idea and few games and media examples like counterstrike, Townsmen, clash of clans and the manhwa (Korean manga) Solo levelling. CounterStrike C...

Making Something New

I've been considering over the last few weeks how to make this game different on the play store, how to bring casual and hardcore gamers to our game. Heres a few of my ideas.  (disclaimer these are purely unrefined notes)  In city builder mode you have to micromanage resources to keep civilian happy. ↳ Could have community leaders for each sector of the city.      ↳ A General for the military      ↳  And a Comunity elder for civilians. There could also be comment bubbles that show the player what these leaders would like for their respected community The player could also replace the leader if so desired but this would make the people of that faction feel disconnected from their leader and maybe revolt. The leaders would also have their own status bar that shows the player how much they like them. ↳ A better way of doing this is to suggest to the player through dialogue how much the leaders like them.  If the people star...

Characters and Storyboard

Image
Characters and Storyboard In the game, the player will take the role of governor and depending on his choices he will either be branded as lord of the land or tyrant of the land with at this moment will only give certain speech texts and unique skin. With his available resources, the player can place the buildings and features on their unique map, including farmlands, industry, civ buildings (houses, etc.) and military buildings and defences. They will be limited civilians on the map and only multiply with certain buildings on the ground so the player has to be careful what buildings you make otherwise the game will easily tip against their favour. Managing the land is only half of the current game as the second half is controlling the never-ending hordes of zombies constantly attacking meaning they will have to build traps, mounted archers, and walls to control the flow of the zombies. Characters In this, I only created three characters for the time being The Tan...

Grey Boxing and Choices

Image
I have done a bit of grey boxing to give our team an Idea of what our game will look like this was because people had conflicting ideas so the best thing to do was to get everyone on the same page. I have also thought about Choices and Consequences of those choices which would be something that would add difficulty as well make you feel more in charge or powerless but the point is to create pressure on the player so it wasn't just tower defence focused but also some politics. Examples of games That use Choices: Crusader Kings 2 Europa Universalis 4 Victoria 2 Hearts of Iron 4 All four of these games are made by Paradox however all of them use different systems forcing the player into making difficult decisions that will make the game more interesting and more difficult. Crusader Kings 2 uses events that can fire randomly or be fired off though certain actions which will normally have you, pick out of a few choices and these choices may improve or worsen your d...

THEMES

Image
Style Realistic  - Skyrim, Apex, Last of Us after discussion, we came to the conclusion of using the general style of Skyrim for the style of game we are planning to build. Stylised - BorderLands, Fortnite, Clash of Clans We wanted to add the element of cell shading that is commonly found in the three games listed above. We believe this would quickly attract audiences as proven from their success.     Artistic - Limbo, Binding of Issac, Cube World Finally, we would like to use the unique Artistic design that is found in the games above on the monsters to quickly distinguish them from the castle we are trying to protect.   Setting Medieval SCI-FI Natural/Overgrown Desolate Fantasy Obviously from the way we are building up the game we think that using a fantasy Medieval setting would be best, which in the future depending on the success of the game we can add on additional timelines as Alvis would like to do....
